Flachau, Austria

Wicked!

Flachau. I didn't even know which country I was flying into! Austria it turns out! Went snowboarding with my old flatmate Pedro and his work friends James and Justin and his fiance Niki.

Flachau is an hours drive out of Saltzberg and seems to be a German/Austrian tourist town - not an Englishman in sight!

We spend 3 days snowboarding - about 18 hours in total. It was great cause Pedro and I were skilled enough to go from the top to the bottom without falling and going really fast. We only fell if we were trying a jump or something tricky. Pedro loved his jumps and 360s so my lasting memory is of him constantly falling on his back while sliding down the mountain head first having a chat with me like it was normal!

The snow fresh and the best of the season and it was fantastic and the weather sunny. Because of the sun the snow got a bit sticky and slushy on the last day, so I think that we timed it well.

We drunk heaps of beer and Yagimester - seems to be the drink of choice in Austria. We also played a traditional game in the pub: wack-a-nail-into-a-log-in-as-least-hits-as-possible-with-a-hammer-with-the-smallest-head-you-can-find. The first hammer we used was basically a fat chisel. Then we used a hammer that would be used to hit the nail right into the wood - so only just bigger than the nail head! The last game of the night I hit the nail into the wood with the small hammer in two shots - so incredible that Pedro and I ended up on the floor laughing!

The next day I was so tired and hungover that I thought that I would be able to snowboard the last day. But as soon as I was on that board going down the mountain all the pain left. If I could get that in a pill I think that I would be addicted. Needless to say that at the end of the day every one was knacked.

We flew back to London and I got into bed at 1am and went to sleep.
